This is a granite seat being prepared for sandblasting to create the Knox design in the cutout from the green vinyl covering. Archibald Knox [1864-1933] from the Isle of Man is famous for his intricate designs in silver, pewter and stone.
The motif on this seat is inspired by Archibald Knox’s ‘Silver Box’. An interlacing design traces around the top of the box and spills over the sides. It is embellished with opals and signals a move towards a British version of Art Nouveau. The box is on permanent exhibition in the V & A, London.
